Overcome Solo Trip Fears as a Female

What’s keeping you from booking that solo trip to Bali? Or finally setting out on that European backpacking adventure? Fear. In all shapes and forms.
Fear is what keeps us from so many things we want to do BUT travel should not be one of them.

Preparing for a solo trip, weather your first or twenty first, can bring up anxiety and doubt. That’s why I am here to kick these fears to the curb and help you feel mentally prepared for an unforgettable solo experience.

WON’T I BE LONELY?

A solo trip can be anything you make it. It is such a liberating experience unparallel to anything else that I recommend penciling in some me time during you trip. Your entire trip is completely on YOUR schedule – when’s the last time you had that sort of freedom? Now in my experience as a solo traveler you are never alone if you don’t want to be! Prior to trip, I have
always looked and have had such success into Meetup groups in the city I will be visiting. There is a group for just about anything – language exchanges, expat socials and even bar crawls. My favorite Meetup was a traditional American brunch in the cutest café in Bologna, Italy.

Look at it this way, you don’t know ANYONE. How freeing is that! Start up a conversation with a stranger next to you at the pub or museum because chances are they will be pretty glad you did.

HOW IS THAT SAFE?

Not feeling safe is a common fear for every new traveler however there are simple methods to feel secure when traveling solo. pickpockets and thieves are just waiting for an opportunity and tourists are usually waving the red flag. Make sure to always have you phone, camera and any electronics tucked away out of sight. Try to blend in and refrain from wearing flashy, expensive jewelry. All you need is the midday sun to hit your Hermes
bracelet in Piazza Garabaldi and that the last time you’ll see that heirloom.

BUT LIKE, I’LL BE EATING ALONE?

I know this one is a learned skill. I would practice this in my hometown before setting off solo. This is another great opportunity to meet people. Other travelers, locals, your cute waiter – who can give you some local suggestions OR even a personal tour on his red vespa (during daylight AND in public places ladies).

OMG, WHAT IF I GET STUCK SOMEWHERE?

This is a very practical fear, because well, it’s happened to me on more than one occasion. I suggest looking up the public transportation in your area, know the hours of operation. Always have some local currency on you and a city map- your hotel or hostel will typically provide you with one. With
doing this, you will know when the trains will be running, have money to take a cab is need be or find you way back if you are close enough to walk.
If you can, set up an international service plan with your cellphone provider. Google maps is a life saver.

I also always have both printed and digital copies of my passport on when traveling anywhere outside of my home country. It’s always better to be overly prepared!

THIS IS COMPLETELY OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE

There are going to be a bit of nerves that pop up before setting off on your trip. It’s is completely normal! I can tell you from experience, this will melt away once you arrive to your destination. You will gain so much confidence from each and every experience as a solo traveler and come back with amazing stories to tell.
